In Conversation With...Korda Marshall, Infectious Music
With considerable success working with artists such as Madonna, Green Day, Muse, Eurythmics and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Korda is also credited with signing the likes of Ash, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Darkness, Gnarls Barkley, The Foals, The Enemy, Pendulum and Seasick Steve.
In 2009, he re-launched his own independent label ‘Infectious Music’ that includes The Temper Trap (whose first album is approaching 400,000 sales worldwide), Local Natives and General Fiasco on its roster.
The Music Manager Forum’s Stuart Worthington will be in conversation with Korda, discussing his amazing career, experiences and sharing a story or two.
Aimed especially at musicians, labels, managers and promoters in Wales, this not-to-be-missed event in the quirky setting within Llangollen Steam Railway Station is a must-attend for anyone with an involvement or interest in the music industry (or locomotive industry!)
6.15pm - 7.15pm
An all-round introduction to the DIY music industry
We're talking making music, playing live, synch opportunities, social media, reaching radio and collecting royalties during this special panel discussion. Find out how to get started in the industry or gain some ideas for taking those next steps, particularly as a self-releasing musician, label, manager, composer or promoter.
Already confirmed:
Korda Marshall - Infectious Music
Neil Cocker - Dizzyjam
Dizzyjam is an online service that allows anyone who makes, plays or promotes music to create and sell merchandise to their fans - with no costs. We provide them with free virtual shops, then print and dispatch t-shirts and hoodies to their fans all over the world, paying the musician a healthy commission for each item sold. They provide the artwork, and we do everything else, taking the hassle out of music merchandising.
Neil Cocker is managing director of Dizzyjam, "one of Wales top young entrepreneurs" (Business Insider Magazine), a creative industries consultant and co-founder and organiser of TEDxCardiff and Ignite Cardiff. He is also a vegetarian and a lazy triathlete.
Dave Holmes - Covert PR
As a professional musician and songwriter, just after completing his A-Levels, Dave has worked with people as diverse as BBC Radio and TV personalities, major label recording artists and club entertainers. He formed and ran a successful group that was the first to make their own self financed CD in 1989 – a cutting edge technology at the time!
Recording, producing and releasing a CD lead to putting out other people’s records; like punk legends Sham 69, The Nutty Boys (Madness), Suede, Bjork and Jamiroquai. This, in turn, paved the way for 12 years running a record label and publishing company in Soho, discovering and developing artist for the likes of The Beggars Group and Sony Music.
With a wealth of knowledge, insight and experience into every aspect of the music business, coupled with his passion for music and its creators, Dave began consulting, helping and advising others. As one of the founding members of AIM, Dave has also worked with DCMS and Last.fm. In 2004, he went on to help one of his interns set up the now legendary Warner funded Transgressive Records, mastering all their first singles, including the ones by Bloc Party, The Rakes, Mystery Jets and The Young Knives.
Dave recently started to manage a group of four online music makers / video artist / video presenters / multi instrumentalists with a combined YouTube figure of 150 million views. He also continues to develop Covert PR, aiming to become the leader in digital promotion, online marketing, social networking and viral pr – very much the landscape of the music industry today and into the future.
John Hywel Morris - PRS For Music
John Hywel Morris has worked at MCPS/PRS for sixteen years, taking a key role in the MCPS-PRS alliance’s role of licensing music for Film and Television in Wales. John has had to deal with all sorts of licensing issues in his career and is well placed to offer the best kind of advice to budding filmmakers and musicians alike. John hails from Bangor, north Wales, and is especially involved with Welsh-Language licensing at MCPS as well as serving Welsh PRS and MCPS members. He is also a musician and member of both organisations in his own right.
