Speakers:
Ian
Wallace
Brought up in Blackwood, Ian has spent around 20 years
in the music business, moving to London at the age of 20.
Ian began working for PRS, and with the merger with MCPS to
form The Alliance, he continued to work in the Members
Services Area for the majority of 16 years, with
responsibility for approaching up-and-coming songwriters and
advising them of the benefits of membership of the society,
whilst also handling enquiries from established members
regarding any issues they may have had.
Eventually he
became the Live Events Manager, overseeing live performances
in the UK for all artists, and internationally for the
biggest tours by PRS members (including Rolling Stones and
U2). A couple of years ago, Ian relocated from London to the
West Country and started working for Peter Gabriel's ‘Real
World’ organisation.
They have 3 music publishing
catalogues (Real World Music, Real World Works and WOMAD
Music) and a low-key record label (Long Tale Recordings)
which all come under the 'Real World Publishing' umbrella.
Huw
Williams
Huw is a key figure in the music
industry in Wales. He was a member of cult band (and John
Peel favourites) The Pooh Sticks and has gone on to manage a
number of Welsh bands; with 60 Ft Dolls, The Caves and Sammo
Hung among them.
Huw also got Catatonia signed during
his time at Sony ATV publishing, which led to the formation
of his own music publishing company Townhill Music, funded
and administered by Sony with acts such as Murry The Hump,
Big Leaves and Mo-ho-bish-op-I being signed.
Huw and his
partner Natasha Hale were instrumental in establishing the
Welsh Music Foundation in 2000 and it is thanks to their
efforts that Cardiff has a Barfly venue.
In addition to
all this, Huw has been a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio
Wales and he also helped secure bringing XFM to South Wales
- but it's not his fault that the station has just been
sold!
Recently, Huw and Pablo Janczur won the franchise
to revive the former Cardiff Film Festival under a new
incarnation as SoundTrack: The International Film and Music
Festival for Wales.
