Welsh Language Policy

Welsh Language Policy

WMF’s principal aim is to assist the development of the music industry infrastructure in Wales. From its inception this meant that WMF looked to develop a working relationship with all music businesses in Wales regardless of the language in which they operated. However, since the creation of the Welsh Language Development Officer’s post, WMF is now in a position to offer a more focused approach in its relationship with Welsh language music SMEs. The policy below outlines how WMF plans to incorporate the Welsh language into its working framework.

Welsh Language Policy: Action Points

  • WMF’s core activity is carried out on a project-by-project basis. Each project will be assessed in terms of its Welsh language provision, and examined in relation to the Welsh Language Policy as set out in this document.
  • WMF welcomes correspondence in Welsh or English and will respond in the correspondent's choice of language within the target time of seven days as set out in our Business Plan.
  • Calls will be answered in the individual member of staff's own choice of language, depending on their language skill. However all answer phone messages will be produced in a bilingual format.
  • Information contained on the Welsh Music Foundation website will be available in both Welsh and English, although new information may not be submitted in both languages simultaneously.
  • Information in the directory and other user submitted content will only be available in the language in which it is submitted.
  • All feedback questionnaires relating to events organised by WMF will be available in both Welsh and English.
  • Letters of invitation to meetings, conferences and seminars arranged by WMF in Wales at which members of the public will be present will be bilingual, or in the recipient’s preferred language if known.
  • Every advertisement, statement and press release by WMF to the press and media in Wales will be structured as follows:
    - Bilingually in English language publications primarily circulating within Wales.
    - In English only in publications circulating mainly through the UK.
    - In Welsh only in Welsh language publications.
  • Any nationwide research campaigns conducted by WMF will be published separately in Welsh and English, unless there are either strategic or cost implications that favour a monolingual format.
  • Office stationary, compliment slips, invoices, order forms, and headed notepaper will be in a bilingual format. Email footers will be produced in the individual’s own choice of language.
  • Newsletters will be sent out in English only, but should anybody request a translation we will aim to provide one within the target time of seven days as set out in our Business plan.
  • Information forwarded by WMF on behalf of other bodies will be forwarded in the language in which it is received.
  • All seminars will be conducted through the medium of English, except those specifically organised for the sole benefit of Welsh Language music SME’s. In such cases the seminars will be conducted through the medium of Welsh. Any material or documents, including Notices, Agendas and Minutes needed for the occasion will be produced in the language in which the event is conducted. Should anybody request a translation, we will aim to provide one within the target time of seven days as set out in our Business plan.
